Camouflage

shy

Trying to fit in with the regular crowd
She hides her emotions with an invisible shroud
Barely able to surmise the will to go
She catches herself hesitating to attend the show
Being shy has never been easy
She always feels a little bit queasy
She has learned to cover her anxiety quite well
It hardly seems anyone can ever really tell
She camouflages herself with a convincing smile
Secretly scared to death all the while
One day maybe she’ll be more certain
And be able to come out from behind the curtain

  1. Wonderfully expressed, Michelle. This time of year is particularly difficult for shy ones.

  7. Ahh… we must be kindred spirits then… Although together we would probably wouldn’t know what to say to each other… Lol… 😉

  8. I know… it’s the best socially acceptable situation in my book…. I’ve been shy my entire life and I don’t think that will ever change… 🙂

  9. I used to be very shy, which was at odds with being the bass player in a nightclub act. Now, when I play out, I’m much more relaxed. Blogging is the most laid back form of interaction that I’ve experienced.

  10. I bet playing in a band was hard at first then… Shy people make the best bloggers because it allows them to truly be who they are… 😉

  13. I can relate to this! I wrote something similar about my experience with hiding behind a smile.

  14. I like the entire poem but the first two lines really stand out especially the fact that “she hides her emotions with an invisible shroud.” I guess the idea that someone could be camouflaged in plain sight is what I find so striking.

Very insightful. The people I interact with outside my computer screen think I’m an outgoing extrovert…

  18. It takes practice, but after many years, I think sometimes I even fool myself into thinking that! 😉

  19. I did the same thing when I was growing up. I was so shy my voice couldn’t be heard. My prof. thought with the kind of voice I had, the kids would barely hear me. But I made it.So did you. 🙂
