Hiding Behind Negativity

00000

Laughing it off

Still the negativity flows

Pretending it doesn’t matter

So that nobody knows

Can’t possibly share

What he faces each day

Maybe if he keeps it hidden

It will just go away

  1. It can be so hard to deal with things, especially emotional things and especially when one has fallen out of practice of dealing with them. Reminds me of my dad.

  2. Yes, this is so true… I think men have a much harder time dealing with emotional issues. They are expected to be the strong ones in the family who are supposed to carry everyone else through.

  4. I have been thinking a lot about this very issue lately. How do we help to reach the heart of people who are hiding behind negativity? They are lonely and sad, yet their propensity for criticism and tendency to speak negatively of others–both to their face, but especially behind their backs–tends to keep people at arms distance. It is so hard not to simply react to the negativity and criticism, but to seek to understand the heart of the person beneath it all and try to make a connection there.

  5. So true, Michelle. The poem is beautiful and a wonderful reflection of the Longfellow quote. Another good reason for compassion.
