A Terrible Fate

He felt compelled

To look around

Make some friends

Sit right down

He never expected

To meet her there

Sipping her drink

On an old green chair

But there she was

Sitting alone

Waiting for someone

To call her own

And after one look

He couldn’t resist

He knew this was the girl

He was meant to kiss

So he saddled up

Right next to her

She glanced his way

Somewhat demure

He really didn’t know

Quite what to say

And she seemed reluctant

To meet him halfway

The pressure was on

As he racked his mind

Knowing he was surely

Almost out of time

He tried to find

The words to express

Everything he was thinking

In a minute or less

Finally he was able

To capture her eye

Now he just hoped

She would comply

Gathering courage

He told her a joke

She found it so funny

She began to choke

By terrible fate

She died that day

And ever since then

He’s had nothing to say

  1. Oh, M, what a surprise. You kept me hooked to the end. Guess I should have paid more attention to the title. No, I liked the surprise.

  2. I thought this was going to be sweet and romantic. How tragic! What a twist at the end 🙂

  3. Lol…. I read it to two other people, and neither one of them predicted what was coming. I just wasn’t in the mood for a happy ending. 😉

  4. I suppose I was in a murderous mood. Lol…. 😳

  6. Well, that took the wind out my night. I should’ve known it was too good to be true. Beautiful words, though.

  7. I had even read it to Brian the day prior, and he was still surprised when he reread it today. I guess he forgot how it ended. The poor man in the poem, obviously never saw that coming! lol….

  8. Who wouldn’t be? Certainly didn’t end the way anyone would expect it to, but that’s good. The only time I actually like surprises.
