Hey Everyone,

I know this post is almost a week overdue, but better late than never I suppose.  I was looking over my list tonight for the submissions that were my favorites and I honestly couldn’t choose between them, so I asked my family to choose for me.  And so the favorite of the month is… Green Eggs and Spam, by Larry Trasciatti.  Thank you all for another great month and I’m already seeing some great posts for the June prompts.  Keep on writing!  😉 ~M xo

Welcome back to another month of writing prompts!  I thought it would be fun to try something new this month, and so I created these story starters with the hope that some of you will feel inspired to write some flash fiction.  Regardless of what you decide to write, just have fun with all of it, and don’t let your writing become a burden or a chore.  Have a great month!  ~M xo

30. A scholar of 20, she’d made her mama proud.

If you’re new to prompt writing, and don’t really understand how to use the prompts, please consider the following writing exercise.

Settle into your favorite place in the house with a hot drink to warm your waking bones.  Once you’ve warmed up a bit; grab your journal, a trusty pen, and a timer.  Then, set your timer for ten minutes and begin writing about one of the prompts.  Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, neatness, or anything like that; just write!  Write about anything and everything that comes to your mind, and don’t stop until the ten minutes are up.

I often find myself writing short stories or poems during those ten minutes, but you can write about anything you like.  And don’t be alarmed if what you’ve written doesn’t quite make sense.  The whole idea behind doing this exercise is to get your mind ready and working so that you can begin your day.  Just think of it as exercise for your brain, and once you’ve done your ten minutes of writing, you’ll feel more prepared to tackle the rest of your day.

As always, I will be writing and posting over on my other blog, which can be found here. So please come visit me if you get a chance, and hopefully I can keep up with all of you!

And one last thing before I forget!  I made a quick tutorial for those of you who have been having trouble trying to figure out how to Pingback your posts.  Please go here, if you’d like to view the tutorial.  😉

Bound

Straight away she knew who he was and what he was.  The intensity in his stare could not be mistaken.  There was an instantaneous connection as his steel gray eyes pierced her own.  The hairs on the back of her neck responded to the sudden terror that she felt,  and the unexpected sound of her own heartbeat reminded her that one false move and she would likely be dead.  And so the standoff began, with her only defense now miles away.  If she had only realized the trouble she would soon encounter.  But there was no going back as death gripped its icy cold hands around her neck, threatening to steal her very last breath.  And total darkness was the last thing she remembered before the ear piercing screams began.

The Daily Post Prompt: Deplete

The Silent Scream

2

The forest was thick with the smell of pine and screech owls glided overhead. Patches of thick heavy fog hung low to the ground and left her feeling vulnerable. She was careful not to walk too fast, as she couldn’t quite see where she was going or what she was stepping upon. The ground was soft and squishy and with each step she took, her boots sunk deeper into the boggy terrain. She wrapped her parka tighter around her chilled body and hoped that it wouldn’t be too long before she found her way back to the cabin.

The day had been unusually warm for this time of year and so she had decided to go for a nice long walk in the woods. She didn’t really think about where she was planning on going and ended up letting her imagination flood her mind and in the process ended up leaving her good judgement behind. Eventually, she realized that she had lost her sense of direction and had been wandering around the forest for several hours. She tried desperately to find her way back, but was quite sure that she was just walking around in circles.

The trees were so tall in this part of the forest, that she could barely see the sky through the canopy of endless evergreen pine needles. She did the only thing that she could think to do and just kept walking. She walked deeper into the forest and noticed that the terrain was quickly changing. The day was fading fast and the forest had become eerily quiet. Every twig she stepped upon, echoed in the cool night air and dark shadows formed all around her, causing the forest to turn into a frightful and foreboding place.

She pressed on though and searched for an open place where she could at least sit down and rest and hopefully be lucky enough to capture a glimpse of the North Star to help her find her way. As she continued on, the ground only became more difficult to navigate and soon she was so deep into the marshland, that she could barely lift her feet at all. She wanted to turn back, but she couldn’t remember from which way she had come.

The screech owls were back again, their frightful cries caused her to shiver and tremble in fear. Suddenly she heard a twig snap from behind her and she whirled herself around as fast as she could. To her surprise and great relief, it was only a raccoon and so she continued to trudge through the soggy soil as best she could.

A little while later, she heard another twig snap and figured that her little friend must be back, but as she turned around, she discovered a man instead. He was nearly twice her size and his cold hard stare caused her to stumble backwards. His eyes were black as coal and he wore a long dark trench coat that was covered in mud and torn in several places. In one lengthy step he closed the gap between them.

She tried to scream, but no sound came. She felt her body begin to plummet into a black hole of oblivion. The last thing she saw before she broke free of his evil gaze, was the edge of a silver blade, saturated in a thick red substance, which was trickling down upon the watery ground below. The droplets pulsed through the murky waters and formed beautiful patterns that glistened in the moonlight.

Startled awake by this haunting dream, she woke up in a cold sweat and wondered where she was. She sat upright, trying to adjust her eyes to the darkness and breathed a sigh of relief when she realized that everything had all just been a crazy dream. She laid back down and tried to fall back to sleep, unaware of the screech owl perched on a low hanging branch just outside her window and the large muddy footprints on the floor just outside of her bedroom.

Betrayed – Part 3

The continuing story…  Part 2 can be found, here.

After exploring the tide pools in hopes of finding something edible, Scarlett noticed a large object floating in an inlet not too far from where she was.  She walked cautiously at first, unable to determine what the strange looking object could be.  Yet as she got closer, she realized exactly what it was.  It turned out to be her very own wooden trunk, the one she had stowed away aboard the ship, with all of the things she had brought with her from London.  She assumed Darius must have thrown it over the deck, right after throwing her in; and thankfully so.  She hadn’t been able to determine what it was at first since the entire chest was covered in a bunch of rapidly decaying seaweed.  After getting over the initial thrill of seeing her possessions lying right in front of her.  She soon realized that prying open the enormous chest would be no easy task.  The lock on the front was made of finely crafted silver and bore the emblem of her family crest.  The key was obviously long gone now, as Scarlett had always carried it with her in a little satchel which she kept tied to her wrist.  And after looking down at her hand, she realized it must have fallen off in her frantic pursuit to save herself from drowning.  She knew she had to find a way to open the chest, as it was really was her only hope of survival.  Yet without the key, she felt her one beacon of hope was quickly fading.

To be continued… Part 4 can be found here.
